France has a long tradition of self-sufficiency in quality aircraft development. In large part because of this, France's air arms mostly use aircraft of indigenous design and are among the best in Europe. The French air force has 96,500 men and some 500 combat aircraft. The French navy has two aircraft carriers plus a 12,300 man air arm complete with 130 combat aircraft.
